What nests in Mexico, and on which coast
Mexico is one of the countries with the most sea-turtle nesting beaches in the world, and the phenomenon looks entirely different depending on the coast. On the Pacific side, especially in Oaxaca, the olive ridley nests in huge numbers, with mass arribadas in which thousands of females come ashore to lay eggs on the same beach over just two or three nights. On the Caribbean side, by contrast, the green turtle, the loggerhead and the hawksbill nest solitarily, one female at a time, spread across the season between May and November. These are different calendars and different behaviours, and it is worth not confusing them when planning a trip.
Females return to nest on the same beach where they hatched, guided by a sense of orientation that is still not fully understood, and each nest takes roughly forty-five to sixty days to incubate under the sand. That period is the most vulnerable: the eggs are easy prey for raccoons, birds, dogs and also for people who collect them to sell, a practice that is illegal but still present in some areas. That is why most of the important beaches have turtle camps, run by biologists or by local communities, which relocate nests into protected corrals and watch over hatching until the babies reach the sea.
The calendar, coast by coast
On the Pacific coast the event everyone comes for is the olive ridley arribada in Oaxaca, especially on beaches such as La Escobilla, where mass egg-laying runs from June to January with the strongest peaks from August to December. There is no fixed date: arribadas depend on the lunar cycle and can shift earlier or later by several days, and some beaches temporarily close to visitors while the event lasts so as not to stress the females. Outside those specific dates there is also scattered solitary nesting on beaches in Michoacán, Nayarit and Sinaloa for much of the year.
On the Caribbean side the pattern is different: there are no arribadas, only solitary females laying one at a time across the season, between May and November, peaking between June and August. Green turtles and loggerheads nest on Quintana Roo beaches such as Akumal and Xcacel, while the scarcer hawksbill prefers stretches of Yucatán and Campeche such as Isla Aguada. Since each nest takes one to two months to hatch, hatchling releases are spread from August to December, almost always at sunset or dawn, when heat and predators cause fewer problems.
The beaches that matter, coast by coast
The Oaxaca coast holds the country's most important arribada beaches, with La Escobilla as the main one and Morro Ayuta second in volume, both managed by biologists and by the national protected-areas commission. Access during an arribada is usually restricted, and guided visits are organised at night, in small groups, so as not to interfere with the nesting. Nearby, in Mazunte, the Centro Mexicano de la Tortuga works as a museum and rescue centre rather than an arribada beach, and it is the best place to understand the animal's biology before seeing a release on the nearby coast.
On the Caribbean side the work is quieter and spread across several mid-sized beaches: Akumal and the Xcacel-Xcacelito reserve in Quintana Roo, Isla Aguada in Campeche, and stretches of Holbox all receive nests of green, loggerhead and hawksbill turtles right through the summer. Camps patrol the beach at night to find and protect the nests, and hatchling releases are announced the same day, almost always at dawn, because it depends on when each nest hatches rather than on a tourist schedule. Taking part is usually free or by voluntary donation, and the group is run by the camp itself, not by a hotel or an agency.
How to find a genuine camp
A serious camp is usually linked to a university, to the national protected-areas commission, or to an organisation with years of documented work in the area, and it almost never charges for taking part beyond a voluntary donation to keep the hatchery running. The release time changes every day because it depends on when each nest hatches, not on a fixed schedule, and staff explain where that batch came from, how many eggs the nest held and roughly what percentage usually survive to reach the sea. Nobody offers to let you hold the hatchlings for a photograph or keeps them out of the hatchery longer than necessary.
Finding a camp like that is easier than it sounds: look for the name of the project, not the hotel promoting it, and check whether it has a steady presence on social media or in the local press over several seasons, not just a sign at reception. It also helps to ask directly for tomorrow's release time; if the answer is always the same, say six in the evening every day of the year, it probably has nothing to do with an actual nest. Coastal town halls and the tourism offices of Oaxaca and Quintana Roo usually keep lists of the camps active on their stretch of coast.
What a real release looks like, and what it should not
A genuine release happens very close to where the nest was, almost always at dawn or dusk, when the sand is cooler and the risk from airborne predators is lower, and it lasts only a few minutes: the hatchlings leave the hatchery, walk the natural distance to the water and go in on their own, with nobody carrying or pushing them. That short walk across the sand is not a decorative detail but part of a documented biological process in which the hatchling memorises the magnetic field and orientation of the beach where it was born, something it will need in order to nest there years later.
Spotting a serious release is easy once you know what to look for: no flashes or artificial lights near the water, because hatchlings orient themselves by the brightness of the horizon, and a phone or camera light can send them towards the sand or towards a hotel's lights instead. The group of visitors stays small and quiet, at a certain distance, and the biologist or park ranger decides the exact moment based on the tide and the time of day, not on the group's convenience. If an operator charges a fixed-time ticket, at the same hour every single day, it is no longer a genuine release.
The mistakes people keep making
The most expensive mistake is paying for a 'release experience' without asking who runs it; if the answer is the hotel itself rather than a named camp, the hatchlings have probably spent the day in a bucket. The second mistake is using flash to photograph turtles, whether it is females nesting at night or hatchlings walking towards the sea, because the light disorients them and can send them walking in the wrong direction. It is also common to touch the eggs or the shell of a female out of curiosity, something that alters her behaviour and that the law simply forbids in most Mexican states.
Another common failure is assuming that any beach on the Caribbean or Pacific coast has turtles nesting all year round; outside each species' window there are no nests to protect and no hatchlings to release, whatever a sign might promise. People also fall into thinking that an expensive hotel guarantees a responsible experience, when in reality the price says nothing about who runs the hatchery. Finally, plenty of tourists walk at night along arribada beaches with a phone torch looking for something to see, not realising that same light can scare off a female about to nest and send her back to the sea without laying a single egg.
