Mexico in February: Carnaval Crowds and Quiet Coasts

February splits Mexico in two — Carnaval towns that fill and sell out, and coastlines where you can still hear the surf over the music.

Carnaval dates and where the crowds actually land

Carnaval is tied to Easter, so the dates move every year: the big parades fall in the four or five days before Ash Wednesday, usually somewhere between early February and early March. Mazatlán is the loudest, with a parade route along Olas Altas and the malecón, and hotels in the Centro Histórico and Zona Dorada fill first — in a Carnaval week, book weeks rather than days ahead. Veracruz runs a comparably busy celebration around the zócalo, and Cozumel's is smaller but draws its own ferry-borne day-trippers from Playa del Carmen.

If you want the spectacle without sleeping inside it, stay outside the parade zone and commute. In Mazatlán that means the Cerritos and Marina area, a twenty-five to thirty-five minute ride from Olas Altas depending on traffic. In Veracruz, the Boca del Río corridor south of the centre has more rooms and easier parking. Check the year's exact Carnaval dates before you commit, because a week's difference changes both the price band and the noise level at your hotel.

The quiet coasts that February rewards

February is high season for weather almost everywhere on the Mexican coast — dry days, warm water, low rain risk — but not everywhere is full. The Oaxaca coast is the clearest example. Puerto Escondido's Zicatela is busy with surfers, yet Playa Carrizalillo and the Rinconada strip stay calmer, and the small towns of Mazunte and Zipolite, an hour or so further down the Carretera 200, run at a gentler pace. Rooms here are simple; expect fans more often than air conditioning in the cheapest band.

Further north, the Costa Alegre between Manzanillo and Puerto Vallarta — Barra de Navidad, San Patricio Melaque, Careyes — is where Mexican families holiday, and February sits between the Christmas rush and Semana Santa. Los Ayala and Lo de Marcos in Nayarit are similar. I would book San Patricio Melaque for a long, walkable beach and a working town, and skip Careyes unless the resort seclusion is the point. On the Caribbean side, Holbox and the southern end of Isla Mujeres are quieter than Cancún in the same week, though sargassum can appear on Caribbean beaches even in February — ask before you book a beachfront room.

Cities to base in before or after the beach

February is one of the best months for Mexico City: dry, cool at night, and short queues at the Museo Nacional de Antropología in Chapultepec. Base in Roma Norte or Condesa around Parque México, where you can walk to breakfast and take the Metro from Insurgentes. The historic centre around the Zócalo and Bellas Artes is fine for sightseeing but noisy at night — I would book Roma over the centro for a first visit, and use the Metrobús on Avenida Insurgentes rather than taxis at rush hour.

Oaxaca city is another strong February base, with the walkable centre between the zócalo and the Santo Domingo church, and day trips to Monte Albán twenty minutes by road. San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato in the Bajío are cooler and drier than the coast, with the Guanajuato airport about thirty minutes from the city. These are hotel-heavy towns in high season, so reserve a room with parking if you are driving; street parking in central Guanajuato is genuinely difficult.

Prices, booking and what to skip

Expect February rates above January's but below Easter week's in most coastal destinations, with the sharpest jump in Carnaval towns during their parade dates. Beach towns with three- and four-star inventory — Sayulita, Puerto Escondido, Melaque — offer the best value in the middle band, while all-inclusive corridors around Cancún and Puerto Vallarta charge a premium for the same week. Booking two to three months out is reasonable for the coast; for Mazatlán during Carnaval, start earlier and be flexible on neighbourhood rather than on dates.

Skip the temptation to string together too many stops. Distances are long: Tulum to Holbox is roughly two and a half hours by road plus a ferry, and Puerto Escondido to Mazunte is about an hour on a winding road. Two bases in a week is comfortable; four is not. If your priority is warm water and easy flights, I would book Puerto Vallarta and use it for the Bahía de Banderas beaches; if it is culture, Mexico City plus a short hop to Oaxaca. Check cancellation terms before you pay, since February weather is usually reliable but not guaranteed.

Questions people ask

When is Carnaval in Mexico and should I book around it? Carnaval falls in the days before Ash Wednesday, so the dates move yearly, usually between early February and early March. Mazatlán and Veracruz are the biggest. If you want the parades, book well ahead; if not, choose a different coastal town or stay outside the parade zone and commute in. Which Mexican coast is quietest in February? The Oaxaca coast around Mazunte and Zipolite, and the Costa Alegre towns such as Barra de Navidad and San Patricio Melaque, are calmer than Cancún or Puerto Vallarta in February. Caribbean options like Holbox and southern Isla Mujeres are also quieter, though sargassum can appear, so ask about current beach conditions before booking. How far ahead should I reserve a hotel for February? Two to three months is sensible for most coastal destinations, since February is high season. For Carnaval towns like Mazatlán, start earlier and stay flexible on neighbourhood rather than dates. City hotels in Mexico City, Oaxaca and Guanajuato are easier to find, but book parking in advance if you are driving.
