Staying in Cuernavaca

Cuernavaca has long been the place Mexico City goes to breathe. The centre holds the museums and the plazas, close enough to walk between them; most visitors, though, come to slow down, and the hotels on this list are spread across both moods. The addresses run from Paseo Del Conquistador and Rancho Cortés in the north to Carretera México-Acapulco in Colonia Delicias, with several properties on the quieter streets south and west of the zócalo.

That spread is the point. Couples and short-break visitors tend to gravitate to the hacienda-style properties with gardens, chapels and spas, while families look for kids pools, playgrounds and tennis courts, and business travellers want the meeting rooms and business centres of the larger hotels. Almost every property here pairs a pool or garden with a restaurant, so a day without leaving the grounds is a real option.

Where to stay in Cuernavaca

Rancho Cortés

A northern colonia, the kind of quiet residential ground the site recommends for gardeners and pool-sitters, roughly a ten-minute taxi from the zócalo. Racquet Cuernavaca sits here, with tennis courts, a spa and a playground behind the gate.

Our picks here: Racquet Cuernavaca

Delicias

South of the centre, named in the site's own advice for travellers who came to slow down: gardens, pools and quiet rather than street life. Fiesta Inn Cuernavaca is the property here, on the Carretera México-Acapulco, with an outdoor pool and a garden.

Plan your stay

Getting there and around

The site is blunt about the trade-off: with a car you can cover the region from one bed, and without one there are buses. Tepoztlán is half an hour away, the Xochicalco ruins about forty minutes, Taxco a long ninety minutes, and buses run often to Tepoztlán, Cuautla and Taxco. Expect slow roads in every direction on Sunday afternoons. Within the city, the museums and plazas of the Centro are walkable; the northern colonias and Delicias are a ten-minute taxi from the zócalo. Avenida Domingo Diez is practical rather than pretty.

When to go

The day of the week matters more than the month. Sunday to Thursday rates soften; Friday and Saturday, when Mexico City arrives, they climb and the small inventory empties. Long weekends, Holy Week and the December holidays are the clear peaks. The rainy months, June to October, are the best value provided you travel midweek — which matters here, because a garden-and-pool stay is only as good as the weather and the crowds allow.
