Choosing where to stay in Mexico comes down to matching the place to the trip. Beach cities such as Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Cozumel and La Paz draw travellers for sand and water, with Puerto Vallarta and Cancun also carrying the largest family-friendly hotel counts in this selection. Colonial and cultural cities — Oaxaca, San Miguel De Allende and Mexico City — suit walks through historic streets and long museum days, and each holds a mix of 5-, 4- and 3-star hotels. San Miguel De Allende stands out for parking, and Cancun for the sheer breadth of its hotel choice.

A second group of places works for a specific purpose rather than a classic holiday. Hermosillo is a 3-star city with 15 hotels and parking at all 15, so it fits an overnight on a northern route. Inland cities such as Toluca, Villahermosa and Guanajuato are built almost entirely around 3-star hotels. Coastal spots including Playa Del Carmen and Tulum add 5-star resorts beside 4- and 3-star options, while Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo keeps to 4- and 5-star properties. Weather matters too: on the coasts, September to mid-November brings rain and hurricane season, and Holy Week, July-August and the year-end holidays are the peaks.

3-star or 4- and 5-star: which to choose

Three-star hotels carry most of the choice in the smaller cities: Hermosillo, Toluca, Villahermosa, Guanajuato, Juarez, Chetumal and Ciudad Del Carmen list no 5-star hotels at all, and places such as Tijuana, Guadalajara and Merida keep 3-star alongside 4- and 5-star options. Choose 3-star for a straightforward base where the destination, not the property, is the point. Four- and 5-star hotels cluster in the resort and large-city destinations: Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico City, Playa Del Carmen, Cabo San Lucas, San Jose Del Cabo and Tulum each have 45 hotels and 15 of them 5-star, and Cozumel and Oaxaca add 4- and 5-star properties beside their 3-star ones. For a beach or city holiday with the fullest range, start there.

Cancun and Mexico City each hold 45 hotels across 5-, 4- and 3-star classes, and both figure among the most complete destinations here. Puerto Vallarta and Playa Del Carmen also spread 45 hotels over the three categories. Any of the four gives a first visit a wide choice of classes and locations.

Where should families stay?

Puerto Vallarta leads with 30 family-friendly hotels, ahead of Cabo San Lucas at 26 and Tulum at 25. Cancun and Mexico City each have 22, and Cozumel and San Jose Del Cabo 14 and 22. The Pacific beach towns and the big resort destinations carry the strongest family options.

Which places are best if I am arriving with a car?

San Miguel De Allende has parking at 30 of its 36 hotels, and Merida at 32 of 42. Cancun offers parking at 30 hotels, Tulum at 40 and Queretaro at 26. Smaller cities such as Hermosillo, Chihuahua, Juarez and Aguascalientes provide parking at every hotel listed.

Which places have the most 5-star hotels?

Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico City, Playa Del Carmen, San Jose Del Cabo, Cabo San Lucas and Tulum each count 15 five-star hotels, the highest figure in this selection. Merida follows with 12, and San Miguel De Allende with 8. Nuevo Vallarta is smaller but still lists 8.

Where can I go for a beach trip without a big resort scene?

Cozumel has 26 hotels with 4 five-star properties, La Paz has 18 hotels and just 1 five-star, and Puerto Morelos has 15 hotels, 13 of them 5-star. Boca Del Rio and Isla Mujeres stay entirely within the 3-star class, with 10 and 12 hotels.
