About staying in Oaxaca
In Oaxaca City the neighbourhood is nearly everything, because the city is walked. The Centro, between the Zócalo and Santo Domingo, puts markets, mezcalerías and museums five minutes from your door — it is also where prices climb highest. Jalatlaco, to the east, is the fashionable barrio for good reason: murals, cobbled lanes, and quieter small hotels. Xochimilco, to the north, offers much the same with less shop window. Residential Reforma sits 20-30 minutes on foot and brings the bill down. Our 2026 scans logged 80 hotels with a real price: from US$19 a night and a typical rate of about US$111 — Oaxaca is no longer the cheap secret it once was. Honestly: for Guelaguetza in July and Day of the Dead, hotels sell out months ahead and rates multiply.

Where should I stay in Oaxaca?
Between the Zócalo and Santo Domingo on a first visit: everything is on foot. Jalatlaco and Xochimilco give you the colonial charm with quieter nights, 10-15 minutes' walk from the centre. Reforma trims the bill in exchange for more walking. Light sleepers should avoid rooms above the cantina streets.
When is Oaxaca most and least expensive?
The peaks are unmistakable: Guelaguetza in the last two weeks of July, Day of the Dead in late October and early November, and Holy Week — book months out. The cheapest stretch runs May to June and September, with afternoon rain and the city deliciously empty.
How do I get from the airport?
The airport is 20-30 minutes from the centre. The authorised shared shuttle costs about MX$100-150 per person and works well; a private taxi runs about MX$300-400. There is a ticket desk with posted prices at arrivals — pay there rather than negotiating outside. At night, take the private option.
What should I know before going?
That Oaxaca sits at 1,550 metres: nights cool down even in summer and the daytime sun bites. Many boutique hotels occupy old houses with no lift and no parking — ask if that matters to you. And book the famous restaurants days ahead; the city's food reputation is real and tables vanish.
