We needed an extra night on the island for transportation reason and this seemed like a reasonable option. We would suggest finding someplace else. The first room was a ‘suite’ but it was musty and had visible mold on the furniture (310). We moved to a non-suite (315) and the smell was difficult until we found the urinal cake hanging on the side of the toilet and placed it outside. The location is truly ideal, close to the sea and the main street where the party is in full swing. But it's a real problem for resting, as the rooms are not at all soundproof. Planning your trip to Isla Mujeres
When to go
The good window runs December to April: dry, a steady easterly breeze, flat water on the Playa Norte side and nights around 22°C. It is also the priciest stretch, peaking at Christmas-New Year and Holy Week, when the small hotels sell out months ahead and rates climb well above the typical figure we logged.
May to August is heat and humidity: 33°C that feels like more, with short afternoon downpours from June onward. It is also whale-shark season, June to September, which fills the tour boats from dawn but pushes hotel prices up rather less than you would expect.
September and October are the Caribbean's real low season: rain, mugginess, hurricane risk and a few restaurants shut while the owner takes a holiday. In exchange, the year's best rates and an island that goes back to being a village. If you travel then, book something cancellable and keep an eye on the forecast.
Two seasonal warnings. Winter nortes bring wind and chop: the crossing gets rough and, in extreme cases, is suspended for a few hours. And sargassum mostly hits the eastern shore between April and August; sheltered Playa Norte usually escapes it, but "usually" is not "always".
Getting there and around
Almost everyone arrives by ferry from Puerto Juárez, just north of Cancún: a 20-minute crossing, departures roughly every half hour for most of the day, and about MX$270-330 round trip. The Hotel Zone piers — Playa Tortugas, El Embarcadero, Playa Caracol — cost more and sail less often; worth it only if you are already sleeping there.
From Cancún airport, a direct taxi to Puerto Juárez runs in the order of MX$500-800 at 2025 prices, depending on terminal and hour. The cheaper combination is an ADO bus to downtown Cancún plus a short taxi to the pier. With kids and luggage, the direct taxi buys calm. The car ferry from Punta Sam serves almost nobody here.
On the island you do not want a car. Town and Playa Norte are walkable; for the south there are golf carts at roughly US$50-70 a day — reserve ahead on busy dates — plus scooters and bicycles. Taxis work on fixed zone fares: a few tens of pesos within the north, more for the run down to Punta Sur.
Two practical details. The pier sits in the middle of town, so most northern hotels are five or ten minutes on foot with a suitcase, and southern ones will send a cart if you give them your ferry time. And the last sailing of the night sets your evening: if you are dining in Cancún, check it before ordering dessert.
Where to stay, zone by zone
The north — the town, Hidalgo, Playa Norte — holds most of the inventory and is where we would sleep on a first visit: boutique hotels of ten or fifteen rooms, plain guesthouses, a couple of resorts with their own sand. Our 2026 scan started at US$50 a night with a typical rate in the order of US$110; sea views are always charged separately.
Mid-island, around the Makax lagoon and Sac Bajo, you find bigger, quieter hotels with docks, pools and lagoon water rather than swimmable beach. You gain silence and generally more square metres per dollar; you lose the ability to walk out to dinner and wander back.
The south, toward Garrafón and Punta Sur, is cliff country: sunrise from the room, rough water below, no street life at all. It is a deliberate choice, not a saving. Check how you actually reach the water — ladder, platform or nothing — before picturing yourself swimming from the hotel.
By profile: first visit or short trip, two or three blocks from Playa Norte; couples after quiet, Sac Bajo; tight budget, the inner streets of town and the residential blocks inland, hotter and viewless but close to everything. Always confirm real air conditioning, and if your room faces Hidalgo, ask for an interior one.
Eating and going out
The food is fish and shellfish: ceviche, grilled tikin xic, conch cocktails, fish tacos by the dozen. Pedestrian Hidalgo lines up the terraces with a host at the door and a menu quoted in dollars; you eat well there, but dinner with a drink lands around MX$400-700 a head. One block inland the same plate costs half.
Cheap and good meet at the municipal market's lunch counters and the morning stalls: breakfast in the order of MX$60-120, fish tacos MX$40-70, a set lunch MX$120-180 at 2025 prices. At midday, Playa Lancheros and Playa Tiburón grill whole fish with your feet in the sand and no dress code whatsoever.
Nights are short and good-natured: sunset with live music at the Playa Norte beach bars, a beer on the plaza, one or two places in town that push late. Nothing like Cancún, and that is precisely the point. Walking the village after dark is normal and calm; the only real nuisance is street noise on Hidalgo itself.

Small inventory rules everything here. Hotels of ten to twenty rooms sell out even when the island still has space. For December-April, Christmas and Holy Week, book two or three months ahead; in September and October a week is usually plenty, and you can often bargain.
Before confirming, check four things: air conditioning rather than just a fan; what "sea view" means in that specific room; the real walking distance from the pier if you arrive with luggage; and whether a southern hotel includes transfers or a cart. Photos here lie less than elsewhere, but maps mislead badly.
One seasonal rule: between August and October a cheap non-refundable rate is a bet against the weather — pay for the flexible one.
