We have stayed in a Beach Suite, a Swim-Up Suite, and in a Lagoon Suite and each of these has benefits (though the Lagoon Suite has the best size. Everything about this hotel is outstanding. The rooms are great, the beach and the pool areas are great, and the location on Playa La Ropa is perfect (easy access to town, local restaurants, sunsets). But what really makes this a wonderful stay is the service provided by all of the staff. They do everything right to make your stay perfect. Front Desk and Housekeeping are responsive…
Our stay was wonderful! Great room, we were in a swim-up suite which was also steps from the beach giving us options of the pool or the beach. We could hear the ocean all night which we loved. The hotel itself was very quiet and felt very private, and secluded even with plenty of guests occupied. The food onsite was excellent, the service also excellent. The staff were all so friendly and enjoyable. We were there for 9 days so definitely had plenty of time to really evaluate it all! Great stay! Went for a wedding and it couldn’t have been at a better location. The hotel is beautiful, food and drinks are delicious, staff was incredibly kind and accommodating. They have free paddle boards and kayaks to use, tennis courts, and so much more. Hope I have the opportunity to go back!
Planning your trip to Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo
When to go
The dry season runs November to May and the high season December to April: days of 30-32°C, calm water inside the bays and almost no rain. The peaks are Christmas, New Year and Holy Week, when Zihuatanejo fills with Mexican families and Ixtapa's rates climb sharply. For those dates you book months out, not weeks.
June to October brings rain, usually late afternoon or overnight, and humidity that never lets up. It is cyclone season on the Pacific, with September and October the most exposed months; serious storms are rare, but weather can write off two days in a row. It is also when the year's lowest rates appear.
The honest caveat is the humidity rather than the thermometer: nights barely cool down and air conditioning is not a luxury. November and early December are the rounded months — dry, uncrowded, prices still reasonable. Between December and March, humpback whales pass in front of the bay, which is a genuine bonus rather than a marketing line.
Getting there and around
The international airport sits about 12 km southeast of Zihuatanejo, just off Highway 200. It handles domestic flights year-round plus a decent run of seasonal routes from the US and Canada between December and April. An authorised taxi into Zihuatanejo runs around MX$400 and a bit more to Ixtapa; shared vans cost considerably less.
Overland, the Siglo XXI toll road reaches Morelia in about four hours and Federal 200 links to Lázaro Cárdenas in just over one. Buses from Mexico City take eight to nine hours. Acapulco is roughly four hours down the 200 — a stretch worth driving in daylight, without improvised stops along the way.
The seven kilometres between the two halves are covered by minibuses leaving every few minutes for something like MX$15, a twenty-minute ride. Taxis have no meters: settle the price before you get in, usually in the MX$150-200 range between the two centres. Boats to Playa Las Gatas leave from the town pier; boats to Isla Ixtapa leave from Playa Linda.
Where to stay, zone by zone
Ixtapa is a purpose-built resort zone: a row of towers along Playa El Palmar, with a golf course, a boulevard and shopping plazas behind. It is comfortable, predictable and very family-friendly, and it holds the all-inclusives that push our median upward. Mind the sea, though: El Palmar is open ocean, with surf and currents, and swimming is not always on.
Downtown Zihuatanejo is the opposite: narrow streets, a working municipal market, the waterfront promenade and small hotels of two or three floors. This is where the cheap end of our range lives, including the simplest rooms near the bottom. In exchange you get street noise, few pools and real heat — check for air conditioning before you book.
La Madera and La Ropa are the sheltered bays southeast of the centre, and for many people the best compromise: small hotels, bungalows and terraces with a view, ten to twenty minutes on foot from the malecón. La Ropa is the best swimming beach and the priciest address. In La Madera, ask how many steps and slopes stand between you and the sand.
If you want something else entirely, Troncones (around 30 km northwest) and Barra de Potosí (around 25 km southeast) offer far quieter beach lodging — surf at one, a bird-filled lagoon at the other. Both need a car or an expensive taxi and leave you far from restaurants and medical services. They are destinations, not bases for day trips into town.
Eating and going out
The local speciality is tiritas: thin strips of raw fish cured in lime with onion and serrano chilli, invented on this coast. Add pescado a la talla, split open and grilled over coals, and Guerrero's green pozole, traditionally eaten on Thursdays. Zihuatanejo's municipal market is the best cheap breakfast in the destination, and it starts early.
Eating at the palapa restaurants on Playa La Ropa, feet more or less in the sand, is the classic plan and costs more than it looks — whole fish is priced by weight, so ask first. Downtown Zihuatanejo has genuinely cheap kitchens, with set lunches in the MX$120-180 range and neighbourhood seafood places at sensible prices.
Ixtapa eats inside its hotels and along the boulevard: pricier, more predictable, English menus throughout. Nightlife is modest — a handful of bars and not much else — and bears no resemblance to Acapulco. If you want an evening out with some town atmosphere rather than resort atmosphere, take the minibus into Zihuatanejo.

Choosing a zone here is choosing a budget.
For Christmas, New Year and Holy Week, book two or three months ahead; a small inventory empties fast, and the rooms with a view go first. Travelling between June and October, take a cancellable rate: a distant cyclone is enough to rearrange your week, and in low season flexibility costs almost nothing.
Before you pay, confirm whether an Ixtapa rate is room-only or all-inclusive, because that single detail reshapes the whole budget. In La Madera and La Ropa, check the real walking distance to the sand and confirm air conditioning rather than a ceiling fan. And if you land after dark, arrange the airport transfer in advance instead of negotiating at arrivals.
