La Paz for hotel guests

The malecón, Álvaro Obregón, is where most hotels sit: sea-facing rooms, seafood counters and an orange sunset every evening over the bay. Two or three streets inland the old centre — the cathedral, Jardín Velasco, Madero and Esquerro — holds the smaller, cheaper hotels. North towards Pichilingue, the CostaBaja marina gathers the expensive resort end, which only works with a car. Our 2026 scans logged 19 hotels with a real price: from US$38 a night and a typical rate of about US$134. Not cheap, but it is the doorway to Espíritu Santo and Balandra. All hotels in La Paz →

I rarely write negative reviews, but my recent experience at this hotel was truly disappointing and unacceptable. At check-in, I was asked to pay for my stay — despite having paid in full weeks in advance. The receptionist claimed there was no record of my payment in their system. I showed the email confirmation I had received, yet the issue was not handled with any real urgency or professionalism. On top of that, I was asked to pay a deposit, but the hotel only accepts credit cards. I had three debit cards with me, which were not accepted — something I believe the hotel should be better equi…

The staff were very friendly and helpful. The rooms were clean and comfortable. I would definitely recommend and will be going back to the hotel again.

Made a booking for the wrong date tried to call them the change it. Never got through because the phone just kept looping. We ate that that night. We were going back in ten days made a reservation for one night.. we had something come up and had to go back to the states. We call to cancel, they informed us that we couldn’t cancel that we will be charged the full amount. This was the most unprofessional service I have ever had. We do not recommend this hotel what so ever. Do not go here!!!!!!!

Planning your trip to La Paz

When to go

The good season runs November to April: days of 22-28°C, cool nights and a bay that is usually calm. This is when the whale sharks arrive and when rates climb, peaking over Christmas and New Year, during the February carnival — one of the country's biggest — and at Holy Week.

May and June bring the first real heat and thinner crowds: softer rates, warm water, long quiet evenings. July to October is punishing, with 35°C and above, thick humidity in August and September and hurricane season on the calendar. It is the cheapest half of the year for good reason.

Two honest caveats. The northerly winds between November and February chop up the bay and cancel boat trips at short notice, so leave a spare day. And the grey whales are not here: they are at Bahía Magdalena, about two and a half hours away, from January to March.

Getting there and around

Manuel Márquez de León airport sits roughly 11 km from the centre, with flights from Mexico City, Guadalajara, Tijuana and Monterrey. There is no practical bus: take an authorised taxi or van, on the order of MX$350-450 to the malecón. From Los Cabos airport it is two to two and a half hours by road.

Ferries from Mazatlán and Topolobampo land at Pichilingue, about 20 km north of town rather than downtown, so budget for a taxi or a rental car. Overland, buses run frequently to Todos Santos, a little over an hour away, and on to Los Cabos and the northern peninsula.

In town, the malecón walks end to end and the centre is three streets back. City buses cost around MX$15 and short taxi hops MX$80-150, unmetered, so agree the fare before you get in. For the northern beaches, a rental car is the realistic answer.

Where to stay, zone by zone

The malecón is the default: hotels facing the water, sunset from the balcony, restaurants and the sculpture-lined promenade at the door. Ask for an interior room if you sleep lightly — weekend evenings bring slow traffic, music and crowds strolling until late along some stretches.

The historic centre, around the cathedral, Jardín Velasco and the Madero and Esquerro streets, is where the small hotels and the lowest rates we recorded live. You sleep better, eat cheaper and better, and the water is still five minutes away on foot.

North along the Pichilingue road, the CostaBaja marina holds the expensive end: pools, docks, golf and no street life at all. It works if you are sailing or want isolation with a car. El Manglito and El Esterito, flanking the malecón, are residential barrios with guesthouses.

The Fidepaz area, out by the highway exit, is practical for a work trip or a one-night stop on the way to Los Cabos. Be honest with yourself about it: nothing is walkable there and there is no atmosphere. You sleep and you move on.

Eating and going out

The food is seafood and unfussy: fish and shrimp tacos, chocolate clams, scallops, shredded marlin, tostadas and aguachile. The stands and marisquerías in the centre, around Madero and the parallel streets, generally charge noticeably less than the terraces with a direct view of the bay.

Rough 2025 orders of magnitude: a fish taco MX$25-45, a set lunch MX$120-180, a seafood main MX$220-350, a beer MX$45-70. That buys two proper meals a day without much arithmetic, which is part of why people linger here longer than planned.

Nights are low-key: this is a working state capital, not a party town. A handful of craft beer and mezcal bars in the centre, terraces along the malecón, and not much more; midweek things close early and Sunday the city visibly slows down. Late-night clubbing lives in Los Cabos.

Booking well

The spread in our 2026 scans tells the story: 19 hotels with a real price, from US$38 a night and a typical rate of about US$134. What separates them is zone and type — a small downtown hotel against a sea-facing room or a marina resort.

Book well ahead from December to April, for the carnival and Holy Week, and for long domestic weekends. In summer you will find rooms almost on the day, but check that the air conditioning is recent rather than a heroic survivor from another decade.

Before paying, confirm three things: private parking if you are driving, since the centre streets are narrow and one-way; whether the sea view is guaranteed or depends on the room allocated; and the cancellation policy between August and October, when a storm can rearrange your week.

Trips to Espíritu Santo and the whale sharks run on regulated numbers and leave early. Reserve them before you arrive rather than saving them for your last morning, especially if the wind has been blowing and cancelled departures are stacking up behind you.
