Good place to take a shower or have a nap. Rooms have no fridge. They charge you 3 dollars for a bag of ice, the Jacuzzis don't work, there is no internet after 10 am and there's no internet at night best way to connect is from 12 am to 8 am, the location is ok but you need a taxi if you are hungry because there's no food around, for 157 dollars a night this place is a joke. Planning your trip to Puerto Penasco
When to go
Winter, November to February, is the quiet, agreeable season: days of 20-24°C, cold nights and water too cold for swimming without a wetsuit. This is when northern snowbirds settle in for weeks, and when Monday-to-Thursday rates are at their softest. Windy afternoons are common on this coast; bring a jacket you can actually wear.
March and April hold the peaks: American Spring Break and Holy Week fill Sandy Beach and push weekend prices hard. July and August are the other extreme — 38°C and above, high humidity, bath-warm sea. Late August into September can bring the tail end of a tropical storm: short, heavy rain and closed beaches for a day.
The best-balanced months are May, October and early November: swimmable water, tolerable heat, fewer people. In any season, the variable that matters most is not the month but the day of the week. A Tuesday in February and a Saturday in July are two different towns at two very different prices.
Getting there and around
The classic approach is overland from Arizona: cross at Lukeville-Sonoyta, then roughly 100 km of flat desert on Federal Highway 8, a little over an hour. From Phoenix or Tucson, allow three and a half to four hours. Check the border's operating hours before you leave — it does not run 24 hours, and northbound Sunday queues can be long.
From within Mexico, come via Caborca and Sonoyta — five to six hours from Hermosillo — or from Mexicali and San Luis Río Colorado along the coastal road. Intercity buses run from Hermosillo, Caborca, Mexicali and Tijuana into the town terminal. The Mar de Cortés airport handles only sparse, seasonal service; do not build a trip around it.
In town, the car rules. It is about eight kilometres from the Old Port to Sandy Beach, with no public transport designed for visitors. Taxis run in the order of MX$150-300 per trip depending on distance and hour; agree the fare before getting in. US-plated cars need Mexican insurance, and avoid Highway 8 after dark: loose livestock, almost no lighting.
Where to stay, zone by zone
Sandy Beach is the postcard: towers over a broad, hard-packed beach, with pools, loungers, beach service and kitchens in most units. It suits families and anyone happy not to leave the property. The trade-off is distance — you are well away from the rest of town, and every dinner out means driving or paying for a round-trip taxi.
The Old Port and the Malecón Benito Juárez are the walkable choice: small hotels, seafood places at street level, shops, panga boats and the shrimp fleet opposite. In return you get weekend music running late and plainer rooms. It has the most character in town and is the only zone that genuinely works without wheels.
Between the two, Playa Bonita, Playa Hermosa and the Mirador area offer mid-distance beachfront hotels at more contained prices. Further out, Las Conchas and Cholla Bay are residential rental-house districts: silence, big skies, zero services on foot. Charming with a car, unworkable without one, especially after dark.
Inland along Boulevard Benito Juárez sit cheap roadside hotels with no beach at all. They make sense for a transit night or a work trip, not a holiday by the sea. Eating and going out
Peñasco means shrimp. The fleet lands daily and the town lives on it: cocteles, aguachile, breaded shrimp, whole fish grilled zarandeado style. On the malecón you also pay for the view and the buzz; in the marisquerías and taquerías a few blocks inland you eat just as well for less. A serious seafood plate runs on the order of MX$200-350.
Fish tacos and shellfish from a cart are the local late breakfast — MX$100-150 will over-feed you. The full-size supermarkets are along Boulevard Benito Juárez, and if your room has a kitchen, one proper grocery run on day one reshapes the whole week's budget.
Nights split between the malecón bars, loud and young in season, and the resort terraces on Sandy Beach, pricier and calmer. Midweek in winter, most places shut early — do not expect nightlife on a Tuesday in January. Don't drink the tap water; hotels and shops sell garrafón refills cheaply.
Booking well
Rule one is somebody else's calendar: Spring Break, Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Holy Week and Mexican long weekends fill the whole town. For those dates, book months ahead and pay for flexible cancellation. For a Tuesday in October you can more or less decide on the road and still choose comfortably.
