4.65346 reviewsThis resort is the best! Truly! Everyone was so nice and nice. You get your own concierge who you have access to through WhatsApp. I’ve asked her about reservations and other questions, she booked everything for us. My kids loved the free room service, you can order bottle of champagne, dinner or even extra blankets. Ladies and guys who take care of you at the pool are awesome too. You can get any food brought in to you and drinks all day. Carlos at the beach is in charge of water entertainment and we’ve enjoyed all the fun things such as volleyball, kayaking and boogie boards! He was so nice!…
An amazing stay with Velas Vallarta. Beautiful resort with entertainment, pools, and attentive service. The activities host Angel was funny, professional, and friendly. Waiters Saul, Diego, and Rodrigo were also very professional, went above and beyond to provide service. We were very happy with our stay. Only thing that we need attention is the City tour that was included which seemed they need to improve on communicating to us the schedule changes and transportation. Thank you for everything staff!
Velas Vallarta is amazing—perfect oceanfront location, beautiful pools, great atmosphere, and spacious rooms. We loved our two-bedroom suite with a full kitchen and stunning patio view. The staff made our stay unforgettable. Selerino gave us outstanding service throughout our trip—friendly, attentive, and always with a smile. At La Ribera Restaurant, Roberto made dining by the ocean a wonderful experience with his warm, professional care. Highly recommend Velas Vallarta for both the location and the incredible service!
Planning your trip to Puerto Vallarta
When to go
From November to April the weather is nearly perfect: dry, sunny, 25-30°C — and prices know it, peaking at Christmas, New Year and Holy Week. May to July heats up with still-reasonable rates.
August to October brings the full tropics: humidity, hard afternoon rain and the true low season, with the year's best discounts. Hurricanes touch this coast less than the Caribbean, but September rain is serious.
Seasons with their own names: humpback whales December to March, the May Pride weeks that fill the Romántica, and November — perhaps the rounded month: weather already dry, prices still mid-season.
A wrinkle worth planning around: Mexican national holidays — Holy Week above all — bring a different crowd than the international winter season: younger, larger groups, and beach zones at full volume. The same hotel can be a quiet retreat in February and a party block in April; read recent reviews from the season you are actually booking.
Getting there and around
The airport is inside the city: 10 minutes to the Marina, 20-30 to the Zona Romántica. Official airport taxis charge fixed zone rates of about MX$400-600 at 2025 prices; cross the departures footbridge and apps or street taxis drop considerably. The city buses, dirt cheap, run the whole shoreline.
The city stretches many kilometres along the bay but each zone walks: the Romántica and Centro entirely on foot, joined by the Malecón. Between zones, buses and taxis — agree the fare first or use an app.
For Sayulita, San Pancho and the Nayarit coast, buses and colectivos leave from near the airport; the southern beaches — Mismaloya, Boca de Tomatlán and roadless villages like Yelapa — go by blue bus and water taxi. A car only pays if your plan runs up and down the bay highway.
Where to stay, zone by zone
The Zona Romántica is why most people come back: old Vallarta's cobbled streets, Los Muertos beach and pier, hundreds of restaurants, and the most open LGBTQ+ scene in the country. Boutique and mid-range hotels, with the obvious trade: it is the noisiest zone and the priciest per metre. Our 2026 scan put the city's typical rate at US$122, entry from US$51 — Vallarta is not cheap.
The Centro and Malecón are the middle path: a stroll from everything, quieter at night, with street art and sunsets thrown in. Uphill, Conchas Chinas and the southern slopes hide the hotels with the bay's best views — stairs and taxis included.
Northward, the Hotel Zone and Marina Vallarta line up the big resorts and all-inclusives near the airport: huge pools, wide beach, and a mandatory taxi to dine out. They work for a pure resort holiday; for living the city, they sit far from the pulse.
By profile: first visit wanting city and beach, the Romántica; resort family, the Hotel Zone or Marina; mid budget that wants to walk, the Centro and the streets above the Malecón; romantic escape with views, Conchas Chinas; surf and village life, keep going to Sayulita — Vallarta is not a wave destination. The LGBTQ+ community has its national capital in the Romántica, and the neighbourhood's hotels know it and celebrate it.
A geography note that matters at booking time: 'Puerto Vallarta' listings shade into Nuevo Vallarta and Bucerías, across the state line in Nayarit — fine places, but 30-45 minutes from the Romántica's dinner tables and on another time zone on paper. Check the pin.
Eating and going out
Vallarta eats from the sea: pescado embarazado grilled on the beach, midday ceviches and aguachiles, beef birria for the morning after. The Romántica's seafood stands and the municipal market kitchens serve the popular register for about MX$80-150 in 2025; the same bay feeds a chef-driven restaurant scene that now rivals the capitals.
The full-stall rule applies, and raw seafood wants midday turnover.
Nightlife has two hearts: the bars and clubs around Lázaro Cárdenas street in the Romántica — Mexico's most famous LGBTQ+ circuit — and the Malecón for the live-music promenade. Sunset is the city's daily event: beach, terrace or pier, but with a seat claimed in advance.
Booking well
A solid market, expensive by national standards: 90 hotels with real prices in our 2026 scans, from US$51 with a typical rate of US$122. From December to April book one or two months out — the Romántica sells out first —; in summer and autumn, days suffice.
The named peaks: Christmas-New Year, Holy Week, and May's LGBTQ+ event weeks, when the Romántica multiplies rates. On those dates with a tight budget, the Centro or the hillsides give you the same walkable Vallarta for less.
Local checks: the slopes — an address in Conchas Chinas or on the hillside means daily stairs — noise in the Romántica (interior room for light sleepers), and at the northern resorts the real cost of night taxis into town. Prices on this page are 2026 observations, per night; the live rate is one click away.
Two pieces of local fine print: the southern hillside hotels sell 'bay views' with variable honesty — ask for photos from the specific room, not the shared terrace. And November brings both the weather-price sweet spot and several food festivals that fill scattered weekends: if you see odd prices on a November weekend, that is why.
