San Carlos is a beach town strung along a single boulevard, with Cerro Tetakawi rising behind it and the clear water of the Sea of Cortez in front. There is no historic centre and no real street life: there are marinas, beaches, dive boats and condominium blocks. Formal hotel supply is tiny — our 2026 scans found just 4 hotels with a real price, from US$106 a night and a typical rate of about US$132 — because most visitors rent a condo or arrive towing an RV. And summer is genuinely brutal: June to September regularly tops 38°C with humidity on top.

Which part of San Carlos should I stay in?
Near Marina San Carlos if you want restaurants, shops and the tour docks on your doorstep, especially without a car. Towards Playa Los Algodones and Marina Real you sleep in front of better sand, quieter but more isolated. Bahía Delfín, Playa San Francisco and Bahía San Carlos are mostly condominiums. Guaymas and Playa Miramar are for price, work or the ferry, nothing else.
When is it cheapest to sleep here?
Summer, June to September: 40°C days, humidity and storms, but rates give way. Winter, November to March, is high season, when long-stay visitors from the US and Canada fill the town; add Holy Week, March spring break and the year-end holidays. How do I get here and get around?
Fly into Hermosillo (HMO) and drive roughly 130 km on the toll section of Highway 15, about an hour and a half; that is where the rental desks are. Guaymas airport (GYM) is 25 minutes away but handles few flights. By bus you reach Guaymas and finish by taxi, around MX$250-350. In town, ten kilometres of boulevard and no useful local buses.
When is the water good for swimming and diving?
August to October the Sea of Cortez hits 28-30°C and visibility is at its best: this is the season for Isla San Pedro Nolasco and Piedras Pintas. In winter the water drops to 17-19°C and you swim in a wetsuit; most hotel pools are not heated. March and April sit in between, with afternoon wind that sometimes cancels boat trips.
