Planning your trip to Tulum

When to go

December to March is high season, and in Tulum that means record prices: New Year here ranks among Mexico's most expensive nights, and January holds the level. Holy Week is the other peak. From May to October come humid heat, afternoon rain and sargassum in waves — and with them the year's best rates, above all in September and October.

Sargassum hits Tulum with particular cruelty because the beach is the product: some seasons the turquoise postcard is a brown mat. Serious hotels rake daily and cenotes rescue any bad day, but if you travel between May and October, come with adjusted expectations and recent reports in hand.

The sweet spot is late November — dry, before party pricing — and May if you accept the seaweed lottery in exchange for soft rates.

Getting there and around

Tulum now has its own airport (TQO), about 30-35 minutes out, with growing domestic and international service. The classic route is still Cancún: 2 hours by road, ADO for about MX$280-400 at 2025 prices, or a private transfer at US$100-130 per vehicle. The Tren Maya also stops at Tulum; useful depending on timetables, which are worth checking.

Local logistics are the big theme: town to beach is 4-5 kilometres and taxis charge steep fixed rates — always agree the price first. The bicycle is the Tulum tool: nearly every hotel lends or rents them, and the town-to-beach path is a flat 20-25 minute ride.

The beach road is a single lane and jams at midday; move early. For cenotes and ruins, colectivos on the federal highway or a bike to the near ones; visit the Tulum ruins at opening, before the heat and the buses.

Where to stay, zone by zone

The beach hotel zone is the strip between jungle and sea that made Tulum famous: wood-and-palm boutique hotels, many running on solar or generators, dollar prices and meticulous aesthetics. It is very expensive by Mexican standards — the town's typical rate in our 2026 scan was US$104, and the beach lives far above it — and its quirks (power cuts, weak wifi, mosquitoes) are part of the package. The southern stretch toward Sian Ka'an is quieter and dearer; the north, toward the ruins, somewhat more accessible.

The pueblo is the other half: hotels from US$26 in our scan, taquerías, real life, and the logical budget base. From there, bike or taxi to the beach. Aldea Zamá and La Veleta, in between, are the new districts: pool condos, mid prices and calm — pedalling distance from everything.

The honest decision: if you come for the scene — photogenic breakfasts, beach clubs, boutiques — pay for the beach. If you come for the region — cenotes, ruins, Sian Ka'an — the pueblo or La Veleta return double for half.

By profile: honeymoon or anniversary, the southern beach stretch — the silence and tall palapas justify the once-in-a-lifetime premium; friend group, the northern beach arm or Aldea Zamá near the clubs; real budget, the pueblo between Avenida Tulum and La Veleta; family, the Aldea Zamá condos with pool and kitchen. And anyone travelling purely for cenotes and ruins can consider basing in Valladolid, an hour away, at half the price.

A mapping caution: listings labelled 'Tulum beach' sometimes sit on the Tankah or Soliman bays, 10-15 minutes north by car — beautiful, calm, and nowhere near the walkable strip. Check the pin before paying beach-zone prices.

Eating and going out

There are two Tulums at the table too. The beach one charges European-capital prices in dollars for trend cuisine — sometimes excellent, often just set dressing. The pueblo cooks the actual peninsula: night taquerías, cocinas económicas with a set menu around MX$90-140 in 2025, and midday seafood joints on the back streets.

Breakfast is where the beach best earns its prices; dinner is where it least does. The full-stall rule works in the pueblo as everywhere in the country.

Beach nights orbit beach clubs and DJ parties — covers and minimum spends are common; pueblo nights are beers, mezcal and conversation. Cash rules on both sides: many places take no cards and the ATMs charge serious fees — bring pesos in advance.

Booking well

Tulum is a market of violent peaks: 120 hotels with real prices in our 2026 scans, from US$26 with a typical of US$104, but the same beds sell at triple for New Year. For December-January book months out; the rest of the year two or three weeks is plenty, and September-October reward those who wait.

In the beach zone, verify what you would take for granted elsewhere: whether there is air conditioning and on what schedule (generators switch off), whether the price is in dollars or pesos, and the cancellation policy in hurricane season. In the pueblo, verify the real distance to the beach: 'minutes from the sea' can mean 5 kilometres.

Sargassum is the final check: recent reports for the exact stretch before paying beachfront premiums between May and October. Prices on this page are 2026 observations, per night; the live rate is one click away in the widget.

A final layer of Tulum fine print: many beach hotels price in dollars and add 10-15 per cent service charges that never appear in the advertised rate — ask for the final total before confirming. And the pueblo's 'hotels with beach' sell access to affiliated beach clubs: verify whether the lounger and towel are included or another US$30-50 per person per day.
