About staying in Cozumel

Cozumel organises itself from the sea. San Miguel, the only town, holds the budget and mid-range hotels, the ferry and cruise piers, and nearly all the restaurants — sleeping here is practical and cheap. The north shore has a short strip of quiet beach hotels; the southern road, heading for the reefs, lines up the dive resorts and all-inclusives in front of the best water entries. The east side, open to the rough Caribbean, is wild and nearly hotel-free — for visiting, not sleeping. Our 2026 scans logged 33 hotels with a real price: from US$49 a night and a typical rate of about US$128. Honestly: Cozumel lives off diving and cruise ships — when three or four boats coincide, downtown saturates at midday — and without a rented car or scooter, half the island stays out of reach.

Cozumel hotel FAQs

Where should I stay in Cozumel?

In San Miguel for budget, restaurants and the ferry on foot — ideal if you dive with pier-based operators. Along the southern zone for reef-front resorts, taxiing back and forth. The north shore is the quiet middle. If you plan to dive daily, ask your operator where they depart from before booking.

When is Cozumel cheapest?

September to November, the Caribbean low season: rain, possible sargassum on the east coast, and real discounts. High season runs December to April, with February's Carnaval — Mexico's oldest — as the local peak. Dive visibility holds up most of the year.

How do I get to Cozumel?

The ferry from Playa del Carmen takes 45 minutes and costs about MX$270-300 each way, sailing hourly. Cozumel's airport takes direct domestic and US flights and sits 5-10 minutes from town. On the island it is taxis or a rental: there is no useful public transport.

What should I know before going?

That cruise days change the island: with several ships anchored, the seafront and shops pack out from 10 to 4 — divers never notice, they are underwater. Rent a jeep or scooter one day for the east side: wild beaches, lonely bars and the Punta Sur lighthouse. The reef is a national park: no touching, no feeding.
