San Miguel, the only town, holds the budget and mid-range hotels, the ferry and cruise piers, and nearly all the restaurants — sleeping here is practical and cheap. The north shore has a short strip of quiet beach hotels; the southern road, heading for the reefs, lines up the dive resorts and all-inclusives in front of the best water entries. The east side, open to the rough Caribbean, is wild and nearly hotel-free — for visiting, not sleeping. 4.1467 reviewsTERRIBLE! STAY AWAY! You have been warned. The hotel is under renovation and is basically closed. The lobby, front entrance pool, everything is being worked on. We had to be escorted around the side of the hotel, to a make shift lobby. None of this was disclosed prior to booking, if it had been, we would have NEVER booked this place. We stayed one night, had checked out, without any type of refund.
Amazing! The staff are fantastic and treat you like family. They offer great service, and wonderful recommendations for things to do, places to go, and tours to go on. Housekeeping was on top of it every day! From the concierge, front desk staff, service staff, and helpers- they make this hotel a gem of a place to stay! The pool area is always clean, service is prompt. The best part is the snorkeling! Snorkeling right from the hotel is amazing- all sorts of fish, rays, lobsters, eels, crabs- anything you could want to see! Thank you so much for making our stay so enjoyable!
We’ve been coming to Coral Princess for a couple decades. The facility is showing some signs of age in some areas. Very nice location. Food is always good. Staff is exceptional.
Planning your trip to Cozumel
When to go
High season runs December to April: the leeward west side goes flat, visibility sits around 25-30 metres, and the southern dive resorts charge what they like. January and Carnaval week in February are the local peaks — for those dates you book months ahead, not days ahead.
From November to February the nortes blow through: two or three days of hard wind that can close the port, halt the ferry and scrub the dive boats. They will not ruin a week; they can ruin a three-day trip. Don't schedule your flight home right after the last afternoon crossing.
May to August is the middle deal: humid 32-34°C, water at 28, fewer bodies on the reef and rates below winter. Hurricane season officially runs June to November and concentrates in September and October — unlikely to hit your week, but factor it in before buying non-refundable rates.
September to November is the true low: afternoon rain, possible sargassum on the east coast — the sheltered west usually escapes — and the deepest discounts. Between May and September turtles nest at Chen Río and Punta Morena; those beaches are patrolled at night and you do not walk them with a torch.
Getting there and around
The ferry from Playa del Carmen takes 45 minutes, leaves hourly from the downtown pier and costs about MX$270-300 each way at 2025 prices, with two companies alternating departures. If you genuinely need your own car, the vehicle ferry from Punta Venado exists — slower, dearer and with far fewer sailings.
The airport is 5-10 minutes from San Miguel, with direct US flights and domestic connections. Only authorised vans work the arrivals curb, charging per person; heading back, any taxi costs less. If you travel with heavy dive gear, flying in spares you the business of hauling bags on and off the ferry.
On the island, taxis rule: fixed zone fares, no ride-hailing apps, roughly MX$100-150 within town and MX$300-500 out to the southern hotels, more after dark. Agree the price before you get in. There is no useful public transport, and the distances between zones are not walkable.
So most people rent: a scooter for about MX$500-700 a day, a jeep from something like MX$900-1,300, with insurance terms worth reading twice. One road circles the island and the loop takes two or three hours with stops. Fill up in town — there is no fuel on the east side — and avoid that stretch at night: no lighting, no signal.
Where to stay, zone by zone
San Miguel is the logical base for most travellers: small and mid-size hotels between Avenida Rafael Melgar and Avenida 30, walking distance from the ferry pier, the dive shops and dinner. This is where the market floor sits — from about US$49 a night in our 2026 scans — against an island-wide typical rate near US$128.
Within town, the real variable is noise. The blocks along the waterfront and the main plaza carry bars and cruise traffic until mid-afternoon; north of Avenida Benito Juárez, or inland towards 25 and 30, the same money buys quiet and sometimes a pool, in exchange for a ten-minute walk.
The northern strip is a handful of hotels on calm beach, 5-10 minutes by taxi from the centre: sea without the resort machinery, easy with children. The Costera Sur road lines up the dive hotels and all-inclusives opposite the best water entries — own pier, tanks aboard — but every dinner out costs a taxi each way.
By profile: daily diving with a town operator, San Miguel; diving off the hotel dock with zero logistics, the southern zone; first visit with kids, the north strip; long stay with a kitchen, the streets south of Juárez, where apartments cost less. The east side is for driving out and coming back.
Eating and going out
The town eats well and cheaply the moment you step away from the seafront. The loncherías inside the municipal market on Rosado Salas serve breakfast or a set lunch for around MX$90-150 at 2025 prices, and taco stands on Avenida 30 run MX$20-35 apiece. On Melgar, facing the ships, the same plate triples.
Eat pescado a la talla, tikin xic, ceviche and morning cochinita, and have a serious breakfast before diving — nobody eats properly between two tanks. On cruise days the centre jams from 10 to 4, so go early or late, and treat dollar-only menus as a warning: one block inland, prices return to pesos.
Nights are quiet and early: bars around the plaza and along Avenida 5, live music without volume wars, and little happening after midnight midweek. The beach bars on the east coast shut at sunset and that road has no lighting, so plan to drive back in daylight. Walking the centre at night is safe here — worth saying plainly.
Booking well
Cozumel is a small market: 33 hotels with a real price in our 2026 scans, from US$49 with a typical rate in the order of US$128. That gap between floor and median is the island in one line — cheap town, expensive dive resorts — and it means the budget rooms go first.
If the trip is about diving, lock the operator before the hotel. Ask which pier the boat leaves from and what the daily transfer costs; several southern hotels sell room-plus-dives packages, which pay off across five diving days and make no sense across two.
For December to April, and Carnaval above all, move one or two months ahead. September and October are the reverse: space and discounts, but pay for the flexible-cancellation rate — in mid-hurricane season it is cheap insurance. Also check what an all-inclusive actually covers here: drinks and diving are frequently billed apart.
Two last checks before you commit: real air conditioning and hot water in the simpler town hotels, and whether the property has beach, a dock, or only a pool — much of the west shore is rock rather than sand.
