Excellent service from a wonderful team of people. Super gym which a priority for us. Good massage too at the spa. The rooms were a little tired and could be cleaner but the bed was very comfortable. Great views from the huge windows. Breakfast is plentiful and so many great Mexican dishes to try. The bar area has a nice energy and live music in the evening. The lifts were a bit frustrating as only one working. Nice rooftop bar and pool area. Stayed here for 2 nights and had a great experience. We reserved a room in the 24th floor which is within the Rock Royalty Lounge. They provide finger foods such as sandwiches, veggies, fruit, pastries, soda, juice and water from 8am to 11am. They also offer this from 5pm to 8pm, the only difference is that they don't offer juice but instead have beer in a mini fridge. This service is included with the room. Planning your trip to Zapopan
When to go
Zapopan sits above 1,500 metres on the Jalisco plateau, and it shows: October-November and February-March are the rounded months, with days around 26-28°C, clean skies and cool evenings. December and January keep the afternoons pleasant but drop to 8-10°C before dawn, and plenty of mid-range hotels heat poorly — ask about heating if you are sleeping near the basilica.
April and May are the hard stretch: 33-35°C, dry air and dust before the rains break. From June to September it rains almost daily, usually late afternoon or at night, in short violent storms that cool everything and turn the Primavera forest green. Entirely travellable if you start early and accept getting soaked for an hour.
The calendar that rules here is the corporate one, not the sun. The FIL book fair in late November and early December tightens the whole metro area, and the big trade fairs do the same even though the venue sits on the Guadalajara side. If your dates overlap, book weeks ahead and expect no discounts.
On 12 October the pilgrimage fills central Zapopan and closes streets from before dawn. It is a spectacle of the first order, but if you need to drive anywhere near the basilica that morning, you simply will not. The weekly contrast is real too: Friday to Sunday, Andares empties of executives and rates soften.
Getting there and around
Miguel Hidalgo airport lies to the southeast, at the opposite end of the metro area: allow 40-60 minutes to Andares and roughly MX$450-650 in an authorised taxi, a little less by app. There is a bus toward central Guadalajara, but reaching Zapopan means a long transfer, and with luggage it rarely pays off.
Overland, almost all intercity coaches arrive at the Nueva Central Camionera in Tlaquepaque — again the far corner, a long 45 minutes in traffic. The old terminal handles runs to Tequila and nearby towns. Coming from Puerto Vallarta or Mexico City, build the internal transfer into your day: here distances are paid in time, not kilometres.
Inside Zapopan it is a car or the apps. Light-rail line 3 links the Zapopan centre with downtown Guadalajara in about 25 minutes for under MX$15, and Mi Macro Periférico runs the ring road north to south; neither drops you at the door of the Puerta de Hierro towers, and in the rain that last walk stings.
Rush hour on López Mateos, Patria and Vallarta — 7.30 to 10 and 6 to 8.30 — doubles any journey. With a car, though, Zapopan is the best exit door in the metro area: the Primavera forest 20-30 minutes out, Tequila a little over an hour on Highway 15, and the Guachimontones at Teuchitlán in about seventy-five minutes.
Where to stay, zone by zone
Andares and Puerta de Hierro are modern towers among malls, corporate offices and white-tablecloth restaurants: this is where the luxury concentrates and where the city's highest rates live, with real drops from Friday to Sunday. Everything you need by day is walkable inside the bubble; leaving it always means wheels.
Zapopan's own centre — the basilica, its esplanade, the 20 de Noviembre walkway — has small and mid-sized hotels, gentler prices and a plaza life the executive district cannot offer: the market, cafés, the MAZ and the Huichol museum a step away. It is quiet and shuts early, but with light rail alongside it works for car-free sightseeing.
Then come the road corridors: Ciudad Granja and the Periférico arc, Avenida Vallarta heading into Guadalajara, the Plaza Patria area. These are chains and roadside hotels with no charm, beside noisy arteries, and this is where our 2026 scans found the lowest rates, from around US$43 a night. Without a car, hard to recommend.
By profile: work or conferences, Andares-Puerta de Hierro; cultural trip on a mid budget, the Zapopan centre near the light rail; family with a car, the pool-and-parking hotels to the north; long stay, apartments in Providencia or Chapalita, technically Guadalajara but ten minutes away. The typical rate we logged for the city runs around US$79 a night.
Eating and going out
Jalisco eats heartily and Zapopan is no exception: beef birria at midday, tortas ahogadas that are genuinely spicy, carne en su jugo, and cold tejuino from a street cart. Around the central market and in neighbourhood fondas, a full plate runs about MX$70-130 at 2025 prices; the good birrierías open early and close when the pot runs out.
In Andares and Puerta de Hierro the scene changes entirely: chef-driven kitchens, grills, sushi, air-conditioned terraces and wine lists. Budget roughly MX$400-800 a head with a drink, capital-city money. Book a table, especially Thursday and Friday nights, and note that the dress code is stricter than the climate would suggest.
For nightlife, the action is outside Zapopan: Colonia Americana and Avenida Chapultepec hold the bars, while Providencia and Chapalita — right on the border — offer the calmer version. From central Zapopan to the Americana is 25-40 minutes by app depending on traffic, and getting home in the small hours is straightforward.
Two practical warnings. Breathalyser checkpoints are real and frequent across the metro area at weekends: if dinner comes with wine, leave the car. And distances deceive — 'ten minutes' on a map can be half an hour on the Periférico at eight on a Friday, so book with margin and leave earlier than you think.
Booking well
Our 2026 scans found a couple of dozen hotels with a real price in Zapopan: from US$43 a night, with a typical rate in the order of US$79. This is a small executive market rather than a tourist one, which means it fills midweek and cheapens at weekends — precisely the opposite of a beach destination.
Travelling for work Tuesday to Thursday, book two or three weeks out. For a weekend, a few days' notice usually suffices, except on Mexican long weekends, pilgrimage dates or big fair weeks. Non-refundable rates make sense when your diary is locked; if the trip hangs on flights or meetings that move, pay for the flexible one.
Check three things before you click: parking, which the Andares towers usually charge separately at around MX$150-250 a night; breakfast, which matters in a district of expensive restaurants; and the true distance to wherever you actually need to be, measured in minutes of traffic rather than kilometres on a map.
One structural decision remains: if the trip is pure Guadalajara sightseeing, sleeping in Zapopan means paying for daily transfers — split your nights if the agenda is mixed.
