About staying in Bacalar

Everything in Bacalar orbits the seven-colour lagoon, and the key question is how close to the water you sleep. The lagoon-front hotels — along the Costera avenue, south of the fort — charge for their private docks: waking up and swimming in turquoise water is precisely what you pay for. The centre, by the San Felipe fort and the plaza, drops the price and keeps the lagoon a few minutes' walk away. Out by the federal highway sit the cheapest beds. Our 2026 scans logged 34 hotels with a real price: from US$27 a night and a typical rate of about US$114 — the private dock explains the spread. Honestly: Bacalar is a town, not a resort — quiet nights, cash first — and the lagoon is a fragile ecosystem: the stromatolites that make it unique survive neither sunscreen nor footsteps.

Bacalar hotel FAQs

Where should I stay in Bacalar?

Lagoon-front if the budget stretches: the private dock — hammock, ladder into the water, sunrise — is the whole experience. In the centre you get restaurants and the fort on foot, with public swimming spots like Cocalitos and the Ecozona close by. On the highway only if price rules.

When is Bacalar cheapest?

From September to mid-November, deep in the rainy season, prices genuinely drop. High season runs December through Holy Week; at New Year and Easter the town fills and booking weeks ahead pays. Note: after very heavy rain the lagoon can lose its colour for days.

How do I get to Bacalar?

The shortest route is flying to Chetumal, 40-50 minutes away; a taxi runs about MX$500-700. From Cancún it is 4.5-5 hours: the ADO bus costs around MX$400-600. The Tren Maya also has a Bacalar station, about 15-20 minutes from town — check timetables, they are still settling.

What should I know about the lagoon?

That its magic depends on you: enter the water without sunscreen or repellent — or use only biodegradable, rinsed off first — never stand on or touch the stromatolites, and choose sail or kayak over motorboats. The water is stillest and most vivid early; save the swimming for morning.
