About staying in Santa Maria Huatulco
Huatulco is Oaxaca's planned coast: nine bays, dozens of beaches, and a development that left more jungle than concrete. The zones divide cleanly. Tangolunda is the bay of the big resorts, many all-inclusive, on their own beach. La Crucecita is the town — simple hotels, the market, taquerías — 10 minutes from the bays and home to the best prices. Santa Cruz has the pier, the marina and a friendly town beach; Chahué sits between, quiet and growing. Our 2026 scans logged 37 hotels with a real price: from US$40 a night and a typical rate of about US$93 — markedly cheaper than the Caribbean's big resorts or Los Cabos. Honestly: nightlife is short here and the loveliest beaches are earned by boat or dirt track; you come to Huatulco to slow down.

Where should I stay in Huatulco?
In Tangolunda for an all-inclusive resort with its own beach. In La Crucecita for budget and local life, moving by taxi — they are cheap and everywhere. Santa Cruz combines a walkable beach, marina and restaurants. Chahué is the quiet middle. Distances are short: nothing is more than 15 minutes away.
When is Huatulco cheapest?
From September to mid-November, with afternoon rains and the jungle at its deepest green, prices bottom out. High season runs December to March, peaking at Christmas and Holy Week when domestic tourism arrives in force. May and June are hot, dry and reasonable.
How do I get from the airport?
Huatulco's airport is 20-30 minutes from the bays. Authorised shared vans charge about MX$150-200 per person and private taxis MX$400-600 per vehicle — buy at the terminal desk. Buses also arrive from Oaxaca City: around 6-7 hours over the sierra.
What should I know before going?
That the bays are explored by boat: the classic tour visits five or seven with snorkelling stops, and beaches like Cacaluta or La India have no paved access. The sun here is fierce year-round. And the airport has few flights — lock yours in before building the rest of the trip.
